Garnet Felled By Strong Bullets

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Swarthmore All-American Anne Miller '10 won both butterfly events on the women's side and Sterling Satterfield '11 captured the breaststroke races for the men Saturday afternoon at Gettysburg College.

The Garnet men fell to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial after dropping a 146-100 decision to the Bullets (5-2, 4-0 CC).  The Swarthmore women (5-3, 3-2 CC) ran into a Gettysburg squad (6-2, 5-0 CC) looking to end its two-meet losing streak with a big statement.  The Bullets posted a 193-69 victory, the largest point-separation in the Centennial this season, as the home team eschewed the normal practice of swimming races in exhibition once a team decision is reached.

The lone swimmer that Gettysburg could not contain on Saturday was Miller (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary), who continued to lower her butterfly times.  The three-time All-America selection posted a season-best 2:14.15 time in the 200-yard event, winning by over three seconds and then later in the afternoon claimed the 100-yard race (just her second race in the event since the 2008 national meet) in 1:01.75.  Garnet freshman Naomi Glassman '12 (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) swam third in both fly events, once again displaying the talent Swarthmore possesses in the event.

Satterfield (Durham, N.C. / Charles E. Jordan) chased down the Gettysburg top entrant on the final lap of the 100 breaststroke to claim victory, posting a time of 1:01.49 (his fastest time of the season).   Teammate Lance Liu '12 (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) swam to third place (1:03.30).  Satterfield proved even more powerful in the 200-yard event, leading a 1-2 Swarthmore (with Liu) finish with a time of 2:14.00 (also a season-best).  Satterfield just narrowly missed a third victory by three one-hundreths of a second, posting a 2:05.45 time for second in the 200 IM.

Garnet captain Doug Gilchrist-Scott (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) continued on in the quest to defend his title as 'Fastest Man in the Centennial," winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.44.  Freshman Tim Brevart (Swarthmore, Pa. / Strath Haven) nipped at the heals of the top two finishers, earning third (23.26).

Swarthmore senior Stephen Shymon (Encinitas, Calif. / Univ. of San Diego) quietly went about his business, cruising to a six-second victory in the 500 freestyle (5:03.49).

The Swarthmore men closed the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of Brevart, Neil Palmer '12 (Tecumseh, Mich. / Tecumseh), Michael Ahn '10 (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) and Gilchrist-Scott were the first squad to successfully complete the relay with a time of 3:21.57.

Swarthmore returns to Ware Pool next Saturday, Feb. 7, holding the annual Senior Day festivities prior to a 2:00 p.m. Centennial dual-meet with Dickinson.
