Garnet Harriers Dash Into History Books

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior Bess Ritter marked a personal-best in the women's mile race on Saturday at the annual Seamus McElligott Invitational, held on the campus of Haverford College.

Ritter (Quaker Hill, Conn. / Waterford) placed fifth overall in the mile, clocking in at 5:19.72, the finish-time stands as the sixth-fastest time in program history.

Senior Cait Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy) posted the fastest Centennial Conference mark of the season, placing second in the women’s 800-meter run. The 2:19.59 time is a season-best for the runner who holds the third-fastest time in program history.

Freshman Kenyetta Givans (Conshohocken, Pa. / Plymouth-Whitemarsh) was the second runner to cross the line in the women’s 55-meter hurdles (8.81).  Givans was a ten one-hundreths of a second from tying the program record for the indoor hurdles set by Catherine Laine '98 in 1997.

Junior long-distance runner Ashley Davies (New Providence, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) set the pace for the Garnet in the women’s 5,000-meter run with a 19:15.15 time, while sophomore Ada Okun (New York City, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) followed right behind at 19:36.83.

Senior Natalie Stone (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) set a personal-record in the women’s 400-meter dash at 1:03.38, placing third overall. Finishing a few steps behind at fifth-place, Givans had a 1:04.84 time.

On the field-event side, freshman Nicole Cox (Los Gatos, Calif. / Castilleja School) finished fourth in the women’s high jump, leaping a 1.45 meters which qualifies her for the Centennial Conference Championships. Classmate Taylor Wuerker (Washington, D.C. / TC Williams) registered a high of 2.59 meters in the women’s pole vault, placing third.  Wuerker’s vault marks the third highest jump in program history.

On the men's side, senior Youngjun Heo (Newburg, Ind. / Castle) qualified for the Centennial Champions this afternoon for his efforts in the 55-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash while sophomore Dan Kurz (Melrose, Mass. / Melrose) qualified for the 400-meter dash.

Next Saturday, February 7th the Garnet track teams will travel down Route 320 to compete in the Widener Invitational. The first event is set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
