Swat Men Fall to Diplomats
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore forwards Sam Lacy '11 and Raul Ordonez '09 each scored 17 points but a streaking Franklin & Marshall men's basketball team used torrid shooting to earn a 92-67 win over the Garnet in Centennial action at the Mayser Center Wednesday night.
Franklin & Marshall's James McNally and Georgio Milligan hit double figures in the first-half surge with McNally pacing the Diplomats (10-0, 3-0 CC) with 22 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Steve Tolliver had a career night, draining five three-pointers to help him match a career-best 17 points.
Ordonez (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit) led the Garnet (1-8, 0-3 CC) with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Lacy (Jericho, Vt. / Mount Mansfield) also scored 17 points and Danny Walker (Westbury, N.Y. / Westbury) made it three players in double digits with 16.
The Diplomats posted its largest first-half margin, scoring 53 points behind 61.3 percent shooting.
F&M went 5-for-5 from the field in the first 2:43 of the game to jump out to a quick 12-0 lead. Ordonez managed to get Swarthmore on the board, sandwiching a good layup in between two triples by Tolliver. Clay Scovill followed that with a three-point play to push the lead to 21-5 at the 15:33 mark.
With 8:35 left in the half, the Diplomats had only missed three shots enroute to a 36-17 lead (14-for-17). McNally helped F&M take a 25-point lead at halftime, scoring the final 11 of 15 points to give him 16 points in 20 minutes of work.
The second half was much of the same as the first half, with the Diplomats holding onto a 20-point lead and even reaching 30 with 5:37 remaining. Mike Baker scored the first nine points of the half, keeping Swarthmore out of reach after hitting two three-pointers and getting a three-point play from Ordonez out of the gate.
The Garnet return to Tarble Pavilion this Saturday, hosting Dickinson at 4:00 p.m. as the second part of the Centennial doubleheader.
