Garnet Get Off Script on West Coast

WHITTIER, Calif. -- The Garnet women's basketball team opened up the second semester at the Purple and Gold Classic Saturday afternoon, falling to a scrappy Whittier team 75-52 in the Graham Athletic Center on the campus of Whittier College.

Swarthmore saw its three-game win streak come to an end as the host Poets (7-3) forced 24 Garnet turnovers in the first day of competition at the 26th annual tournament in southern California.

Swarthmore sophomore Kathryn Stockbower (Fort Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) posted her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.  The Garnet forward currently ranks second in all of Division III in rebounds per game (Centennial-best 16.1).

The Garnet (4-5) also got ten points from junior forward Pamela Costello (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) while captain Melissa Grigsby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) contributed nine points and a team-high four assists.

Swarthmore face Castleton (Vt.) State in their second game on the West Coast this Sunday, January 4.  Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.  The Garnet return to Pennsylvania  early next week, resuming Centennial action at Franklin & Marshall on Wed., January 7.  The Swarthmore women return to comfy Tarble Pavilion on Saturday, January 10 in a Conference doubleheader with Dickinson starting at 2:00 p.m.
