Garnet Rebounds Win Over Owls
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's basketball team picked-up a 59-43 non-conference win over Bryn Mawr Tuesday evening in Tarble Pavilion.
The Garnet improved to 3-4 while the Owls slipped to 1-5 overall.
The reigning E.C.A.C. South Region and Centennial Conference Player of the Week, Garnet forward Kathryn Stockbower ’11 (Fort Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin), earned her sixth double-double of the season with game-highs in both points (23) and rebounds (14). Classmate Summer Miller-Walfish (San Jose, N.M. / West Las Vegas) (pictured right) collected a career-high 14 rebounds and blocked four shots. Sophomore guard Ceylan Bodur (Istanbul, Turkey / Roberts College) had 10 points and four steals for the Garnet.
The Owls had two players score in the double-digits; senior Jessica Allen had 12 points while junior Shanika Bridges-King earned 11 points.
Bryn Mawr held onto an early lead, slowing the pace of the game, keeping the scoring in low numbers for both sides.
Swarthmore tied up the game with six minutes remaining in the half but the game was knotted 27 each side at half as Allen hit a field goal to beat the buzzer.
The Garnet started the half on a hot streak, scoring 13 points in a row. Bodur hit a three-pointer to give Swarthmore their largest lead (42-31) of the game until that point with 14:01 on the clock.
Swarthmore out-scored the Owls in the second half 32-16 giving them the offensive edge to win the game while out rebounding them 50-35 in the overall game.
Due to the rotating conference schedule as a result of the odd number of teams, this game is considered a non-conference game. The two teams will face each other again on Tuesday, February 5th, 2009 in a contest with Centennial implications.
Swarthmore will wrap-up their 2008 schedule, before heading on vacation for the holidays on Thursday, December 11 when they host Goucher. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Tarble Pavilion.
