2008 Equinox Classic
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Oglethorpe men's basketball team picked up a pair of wins at the 17th annual Equinox Classic, relying on the All-Tournament backcourt tandem of Joe Kennedy and David Allison in the two-day event co-hosted by Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges on November 21-22.The Fighting Petrels (3-0) remained nailed a buzzer-beater on Friday night for a 69-67 victory at Haverford and then used a big second half to post a 93-70 win at Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon.
Allison led all Oglethorpe players with 32 points and seven assists in the two games, committing just four turnovers in nearly 70 minutes of action. His speedy teammate Kennedy (Gainesville, Ga. / Gainesville), tallied five points mid-way through the second half at Haverford to give Oglethorpe a four-point cushion. He finished the weekend 9-of-14 from the floor for 23 points.
The Fords (1-1) rebounded from the last-second loss on Friday night, getting a game-high 22 points and five steals from All-Centennial guard Chaz Thomas (Huntington, N.Y. / Wyandanch Memorial) in a 63-58 win over Vassar Saturday afternoon. Thomas, a senior, led all players in the tournament with 37 points and nine swipes, hitting on 60% of his field goals (15 for 25).
Vassar (3-1) also split its games this weekend, shooting 61% from the floor in the second half on Friday on the way to a 67-57 win over Swarthmore in Gooding Arena. Brewers’ senior forward Matt Nunn (Lower Gwynedd, Pa. / Abington Friends) was selected to the All Tournament team All-Tournament after posting 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Swarthmore forward Sam Lacy (Jericho, Vt. / Mount Mansfield) led his squad with 27 points, including a career-high 21 markers and five blocks against Oglethorpe. The sophomore made the All-Tournament team after hitting nine of 12 from the field, three-for-three at the line, while corralling seven rebounds.
