Diplomats Leave Garnet In Wake
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Franklin & Marshall swim teams left Ware Pool with a pair of victories over hometown Swarthmore Saturday afternoon. Garnet senior Stephen Shymon asserted his position as the top distance freestyler by capturing both the 500 and 1,000 events for the Garnet.
The Diplomat women cruised to 130-65 victory while the F&M men won a close men's event, 108-97.
The Garnet men gave defending Centennial Conference champion Franklin & Marshall (1-2, 1-0 CC) a competitive meet, but were unable to pull off the upset. Shymon (Encinitas, Calif. / Univ. of San Diego) easily out-distanced the field, taking both the 500 (5:04.56) and 1,000 (10:53.57) events for the Garnet. Captain Doug Gilchrist-Scott ’09 (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) continued his success in the 50 freestyle, finishing first in a time of 21.90. He also helped the 400 free relay squad to victory along with the freshmen trio of Neil Palmer (Tecumseh, Mich. / Tecumseh), Tim Brevart (Swarthmore, Pa. / Strath Haven), and August Dinwiddie (Morris, Conn. / Holy Cross) by posting a time of 3:20.64.
The Swarthmore women faced a tough task in facing one of the premier teams in the Centennial Conference in Franklin & Marshall (2-2, 2-0 CC). Sophomore Stephanie Su (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany Hills) posted the only individual victory for the Garnet by recording a time of 2:36.19 in the 200 breaststroke.
Both teams look to rebound this Saturday, November 22 when they travel up to New York City to face the NYU Violets in a non-conference meet. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
