Fords Rally Past Garnet on Senior Day

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet senior Sarah Reynolds scored in her final home game as the Swarthmore field hockey team fell to rival Haverford, 4-3, in a Centennial Conference contest on Wednesday night at Clothier Field.

As tradition before each final home game of the season the Garnet recognized the accomplishments of their five senior student-athletes: defender Anna Baeth (Frederick, Md. / Frederick), midfielder Ashley Gunter (Crisfield, Md. / Worcester Prep), Reynolds (Potomac, Md. / Holton-Arms School), defender Jordan Schmidt (Houston, Texas / St. John’s) and forward Natalie Stone (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select).

The first half saw no scoring; Swarthmore (5-12, 1-8 CC) edged Haverford (9-8, 5-4 CC) in the shot category (5-3) and penalty corners (3-2).

Swarthmore was the first to get on the board in the 42nd minute after sophomore midfielder Joslyn Young (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Community) tipped in an attempt from Gunter for her seventh goal of the season.

Haverford quickly evened the score at one a piece when freshman Josie Ferri recieved a short pass in front of the goal from classmate Roxanne Jaffe.

Just three minutes later Reynolds notched her second goal of the season off a blast from the top of the arc to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Garnet.

Haverford took the lead following back-to-back goals from Ferri and freshman Margaret Selsor, pushing the score to 3-2 at the 55-minute mark.

Garnet midfielder Hadley Roach ‘11 (Middletown, Del. / St. Andrew's School) knotted the score at 3-3 with an unassisted goal--her third on the season.

At 63:10 it was Haverford who scored the final goal when senior Zoe Llody sent a penalty corner to Jaffe, making the final score, 4-3, in favor of the Fords.

Baeth, a two-time All-Centennial defender, collected two defensive saves on the day while junior goalie Gina Grubb (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Oakland Catholic) had 17 saves while playing all 70 minutes in the cage for Swarthmore.

On Saturday, November 1, the hockey team travels to Lancaster, Pa. for their final game of the 2008 season, taking on Franklin & Marshall at 3:00 p.m.
