Red Devils Swat Garnet
CARLISLE, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior outside hitter Jen Wang posted her 13th double-double of the season and classmate Erin Heaney contributed 22 digs in Centennial volleyball action at Dickinson College Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils (8-10 overall, 3-1 CC) rallied down a set to claim victory over the Garnet by a score of 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22). Swarthmore dips to 5-15 overall and 1-4 in the Centennial.
The match had significant importance as both teams were participating in the Centennial Conference's Dig for a Cure, a fund-raising effort to aid the fight against breast cancer. Both teams combined for 169 digs on the afternoon, contributing to the three-year effort. To read more about Dig for the Cure, click here.
Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) posted a team-high 15 kills and 22 digs (a season-best) while freshman outside hitter Genny Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary's College HS) added her seventh consecutive double-double (team-high 15th) with 11 kills and 18 digs. Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors), the team's libero, topped the 20-dig mark for the third time this season. Junior setter Kearney Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) paced the offense with 34 assists while adding eight kills.
The Garnet have a week off before their next match; Swarthmore travels south to Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins on Saturday, October 18 at 1:00 p.m.
