Swarthmore Mills Smooth Win Over Owls
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet sophomores Elizabeth Mills and Hannah Purkey scored goals as Swarthmore defeated Bryn Mawr 2-0 in Centennial women's soccer action Thursday night at Clothier Field. It is the 13th consecutive victory for Swarthmore over the Owls.
After winning for the third consecutive game, the Garnet move into a tie for first place with ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins in the Centennial standings. Swarthmore has 12 total points with a 4-1 Conference mark (8-2 overall).
Purkey (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) got the Garnet on the board early, bending a corner kick inside the front post in the fourth minute for her first goal of the season.
The Garnet offensive continued to pressure the Bryn Mawr backline, getting a second goal in the 15th minute. Sophomore forward Megan Colombo (Arcadia., Calif. / Arcadia) chipped a shot off the cross bar and Mills (San Diego, Calif. / The Bishop's School) deposited the rebound in the net for her team-high sixth goal.
Goalkeeper Lauren Walker '09 (Fallston, Md. / Hotchkiss School [CT]) moved into fifth-place in the Centennial with her 23rd career shutout (third consecutive), making two saves on the night.
Swarthmore travels 2,700 miles west to California for their next match, taking on the University of Redlands on Monday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. (PCT). A homecoming for seven Garnet women, the team will also partake in an alumni event following the match.
