CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Swarthmore outside hitter Genny Pezzola and Jen Wang combined for 25 kills and 28 digs as the Garnet picked up its first Centennial win of the season, 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-18), at Washington Wednesday evening.
The Garnet (5-12, 1-1 CC) topped the Shorewomen (9-11, 0-3 CC) for the fourth consecutive year, opening up the evening with a ferocious rally to win the first set. Junior setter Kearney Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) posted two of her five kills in the final points before handing out 26 assists while in direction of the Garnet offense.
Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary’s College HS) was a player on offense (13 kills, two service aces) and defense (11 digs), mirroring the actions of her California teammate, Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn). Wang turned away a struggling Washington offense (-0.50 hitting percentage), accumulating a match-best 17 digs to go along with 12 kills.
Freshman Hillary Santana (South Lake Tahoe, Calif. / South Tahoe) added 13 digs as the Garnet cruised through the final two sets. Senior libero Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors) inched closer to the school record for career digs, needing just four more to break the previous mark (1477, held by Erica George '07.
Washington saw its own dig record fall on Wednesday evening; senior Arielle Brown posted her 1,177th dig to erase a 14-year-old number.
Swarthmore returns to Tarble Pavilion for its next match, inviting McDaniel to campus this Saturday, Oct. 4. An early first-serve is on tap at the volleyball doubleheader; the varsity will face the Green Terror (6-9, 0-1 CC) at 11:00 a.m. with the Swarthmore alumnae match following.
