Knights Circle Garnet, Claim Upset Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore men's soccer team fell to visiting Arcadia, 1-0 match, on Wednesday evening at Clothier Field.

Although the Garnet (5-2-1) out shot-the Knights 25-5, it was Arcadia (4-5) who scored mid-way through the first half.

The lone score came when Knights senior Matt Benner (Telford, Pa. / Souderton) tallied his third goal of the season on a breakaway, dumping a shot into the left side of the net in the 27th minute.

Swarthmore’s offensive line struggled to put the ball into the net, but played 90 minutes with extreme pressure on the Arcadia defense. In the first half, Garnet captain Dylan Langley ’10 (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) provided one of the better scoring chances for the home team, crossing a ball to senior Evan Nesterak (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa), whose header sailed wide left.

As always there was solid defense from the Garnet’s backline, led by senior captains Jeff Kushner (Norristown, Pa. / Methacton) and Rory Stackpole (Sanford, Maine / Sanford). First-year defender Pierre Dyer (Bethesda, Md. / French International School) consistently won 50-50 balls, and started many of the Garnet runs on offense.

Freshman goalie David D’Annuzio (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Garnet, while junior Jeff Kratohwill (Pennsburg, Pa. / Upper Perkiomen) tallied his third shut-out of the season for Arcadia.

Swarthmore return to action on Saturday, September 27, hosting 23rd-ranked Dickinson. The Centennial Conference match-up is set for 6:00 p.m. at Clothier Field.
