Garnet Fall to Eagles

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Visiting Eastern picked-up a 2-1 win over Swarthmore in field hockey action on a humid Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.Saturday marked the season opener for the Garnet. Although Swarthmore (1-3) was the first team to get on the board, Eastern (4-2) posted two goals in the second half to secure the win.

Swarthmore senior Natalie Stone (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) sent junior midfielder Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) a short pass in front of the net for the first goal of the afternoon with 27:06 showing on the clock.

The Garnet offensive line out-shot the Eagles 12-10 in the first half and had eight penalty corners. The half closed with a score of 1-0 in favor of Swarthmore.

Just two minutes into the second half, Eagles’ senior Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley) finished off a pass from freshman Kristin Brownett (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville), knotting the score at one goal for each side.

The game-winning goal for Eastern was scored at 60:37 as sophomore midfielder Sarah Garber (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) knocked in a pass from junior Olivia Derr (Myerstown, Pa. / ELCO).

Garnet senior Jordan Schmidt (Houston, Texas / St. John’s School) gathered two defensive saves on the afternoon, a career-high in one game.

Junior goalie Gina Grubb (Pittsburg, Pa. / Oakland Catholic) played the whole 70 minutes for the Garnet and collected nine saves. Senior Kelly Hermann (Lanhartsville, Pa. / Kutztown) and sophomore Laura Ressler each played a half in goal for the Eagles, picking up seven and four saves, respectively.

The Garnet will travel to Elizabethtown for a non-conference game on Tuesday, September 16th at 4:30.
