Greyhounds Edge Out Garnet
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Swarthmore volleyball team rally fell short at Moravian Wednesday afternoon, as the Greyhounds held off the Garnet 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 16-14) in non-conference action.
Playing its third five-set match in five contests, the Garnet found themselves on the ropes in the final frame, 14-9, on Wednesday. With freshman Hillary Santana (South Lake Tahoe, Calif. / South Tahoe) serving, Swarthmore (1-6) rallied back to tie the score at 14-all before Moravian (4-6) cooly ended the match with the final two points.
Swarthmore freshman Genny Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary's College HS) led the team with 17 kills, 19 digs and four aces while junior setter Kearney Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) handed out 36 assists. Senior outside hitter Jen Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) added 13 kills while Santana posted 15 digs.
The Garnet return home to Tarble Pavilion this weekend to host the sixth annual Garnet Classic. Salisbury, Cabrini and Clark (Mass.) visit campus for the two-day tournament, beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13. Swarthmore will first take the court against Clark and then will cap the night against Cabrini.
