Garnet Welcome Six First Year Players
The Swarthmore women's soccer team announces the addition of six student athletes who will join the Garnet this fall.
The group includes Alyssa Bowie (Weston, Conn.), Emily Coleman (New Haven, Conn.), Marie Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y.), Sarah Scheub (Grand Rapids, Ohio), Samantha Song (San Francisco, Calif.) and Maddie Williams (Landenberg, Pa.) will begin school in the fall and are on the 2008 Garnet roster.
Bowie is a 5-foot-3 midfielder from Weston High School in Weston, Connecticut. She was a four-year starter that earned First Team All-League honors, was a two-time team MVP and the 2007 Kelme Team MVP. She was selected to the Connecticut Post All-Star Team as well as the Norwalk Hour All-Area Team. She was also runner-up for the Westport News Sportswoman of the Year and a four-time All-Conference Academic Team member. Bowie played club soccer for the Easton Explosion, the Connecticut League Champions, and prior to playing for Easton, was part of CFC United, three-time state tournament finalists.
Coleman is a 5-foot-7 forward/midfielder who graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. She earned four varsity letters and was a three-year starter during her high school soccer career. She helped her team to three high school state semi-final games, and in 2007, she participated in the Connecticut All-State Senior Bowl. Coleman also played for Yankee United club team who was the PWSI tournament champions in 2005 and 2006, as well as State Cup finalists in 2006. Her team also competed in the Northeast Region 1 League making appearances in the finals (2006) and semifinals (2005).
Mutryn is a 5-foot-6 goalkeeper from Niskayuna High School in Niskayuna, New York. She was a three-year varsity team member and a two-year starter in net. She was elected captain in 2007 and was named team MVP. Mutryn was a Suburban Council First Team member in 2007 and in 2006, was elected to the Troy Record All-Area All-Stars First Team and named Goalkeeper of the Year. Also in 2006, she was a Times Union All- Star team goalkeeper, a Suburban Council honorable mention and led her team to the N.Y. State semi-finals. Mutryn was a three-year member of the ENYYSA ODP team, a two-year member of the Super Y League ODP team and played her club soccer for the Empire Alleycats. Mutryn was a member of the National Honors Society and was Academic All-America for lacrosse in 2008. Her team participated in the state tournament in her senior year and she plans to continue playing lacrosse for Swarthmore in the spring.
Scheub is a 5-foot-5 forward from Ostego High School in Tontogany, Ohio. She was a four-year varsity starter and captained the team in 2007. In her senior year, Scheub was named to the All-Northwest Ohio Soccer League Senior All-Academic Team as well All-Northwest Ohio Soccer League Division II honorable mention. In 2006, she was elected to the Midland Suburban Soccer League Second Team and the All-Northwest Ohio Soccer League Division II First Team. She was also a five-year member of the Otsego Indoor Soccer Team.
Song is a 5-foot-8 midfielder who graduated from San Francisco University High School in San Francisco, California. She was a four-year starter who led the team to the League Championship in 2007. In 2008, she was voted captain by her teammates and the team participated in the NCS Finals. She was a three-time recipient of All-League honors. Song played club for Juventus Belmont Oaks Barracudas, who were the Laguna Hills Eclipse Showcase Champions and Mustang Stampede Champions. Before playing for Juventus, Song was a member of the WPSL San Francisco Nighthawks. She was also a three-year member of the ODP State pool and was invited to the Super Y National Camp.
Williams is a 5-foot-5 defender from Kennett High School in Landenberg, Pennsylvania where she was a senior captain and four-year varsity player. She helped the team earn championship status in the SCCL American Division in 2004 and 2006, and in the SCCL League in 2006. Her team also made PIAA District 1 playoffs in 2005 and 2006. In her junior year, Williams was named to the SCCL All-League team. In her senior year, she was selected as Academic All-America and to the Ches-Mont League All-Star First Team. Williams was a two-time ODP team member and played club ball for the Hockessin Frost, who were five-time Delaware State Champions. She was also a National Merit Finalist and a recipient of the prestigious McCabe Scholarship at Swarthmore.
