Swarthmore Runners Mark Program History Books
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore track and field team competed in the Second Annual Swat Last Chance Meet (formerly known as the Tuppeny Meet) on Tuesday afternoon on the Walter T. Skallerup, Jr. Track at Clothier Field on the campus of Swarthmore College.
Over 25 schools competed ranging all divisions of the NCAA, the student-athletes broke 13 track records and 23 meet records.
Swarthmore sophomore Nyika Corbett (Myrtle Point, Ore. / Myrtle Point) placed second overall in the women’s 1,5000 meter run while earning the sixth fastest time in school history.
Junior Cait Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy) ran a personal-best in the women’s 800 meter run with a provisional NCAA time of 2:14.39. With this time she replaced Kate Dempsey who previously held the third fastest time (2:14.93) in school history since 1995. Also making moves on the Garnet top-ten list was Lauren DeLuca ’10 (Audubon, Pa. - Kennedy-Kenrick) who crossed the finish line at 2:17.96 for a personal-best and good for the seventh fastest time in school history.
In the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase Swarthmore senior Jon Shoop (Reno, Nev. / Incline) ran a personal-best 9:48.06. With this time he stays at sixth place on the Garnet top-ten list but passes previous personal record of 9:50.58, which he ran last season.
Junior Bess Ritter (Quaker Hill, Conn. / Wasterford) also registered a personal-best with a finish time of 18.37.34 in the women’s 5,000 as she demolished her previous record of 19:02.67 which she ran earlier this season at the Silfen Invite on April 19.
Garnet sophomore Nathalie Degaiffer (Washington, D.C. / Washington International) earned a personal-best in the women’s long jump leaping a 4.29 meters. Also earning a personal-best during the field events was Heather Hightower ’11 (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Oakwood Friends) in the women’s discus with a throw that traveled 24.67 meters.
