Dept of Athletics Names 2008 Award Winners
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore College Department of Athletics held its annual Awards Banquet on Monday night, honoring the top Garnet student-athletes. The coaches handed out ten awards at a dinner in Upper Tarble; the award descriptions and recipients are listed below.
Eleanor Kay Hess Award – This award is give in honor of “Pete” Hess, whose 33 years of service to Swarthmore College and Swarthmore students were exemplified by her love of athletics, leadership, hard work, fairness and objectivity. This award is give to the sophomore woman ho best demonstrates those qualities and has contributed to her sports through skill and dedication.
Anne Miller '10 (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) Swimming
Kathryn Riley '10 (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) Softball
Robert Dunn Award –This award is established in 1962 by a group of alumni to honor the late Robert H. Dunn, a Swarthmore coach for over 40 years. It is presented annually to the sophomore man who has contributed the most to the intercollegiate athletic program.
Matt Allen '10 (Seattle, Wash. / Lakeside) Basketball
Gladys Irish Award –The Irish Award is presented to the junior or senior woman who, through her commitment, dedication and the pure enjoyment of her sport, has achieved the highest degree of excellence.
Karen Berk (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) Basketball/Volleyball
Dinny Rath Award –This award was give by the Friends of Swarthmore Athletics in honor of Dinny Rath, who chaired the Women’s Physical Education Department, coaching primarily women’s swimming and archery, taught numerous physical education classes from 1931-1965. The award is presented to the senior woman who has consistently demonstrated a high degree of achievement, along with a regard for fair play and awareness of the positive values of competition, while contributing to the intellectual life of the Swarthmore Community.
Jennie Lewis '08 (Darien, Conn. / Darien) Swimming
May E. Parry Award –The award is presented to the senior woman who, by her loyalty, sportsmanship, and versatility in athletics, has made a valuable contribution to Swarthmore College.
Katherine Gold '08 (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East) Softball/Volleyball
Ernie Prudente Sportsmanship Award –This award is given in honor of Ernie Prudente, a coach and professor at Swarthmore College for 27 years. It is presented to the female and male athlete that, through her participation, has demonstrated the characteristics exemplified by Ernie: sportsmanship, love of the sport, and respect for teammates.
Kristen Traband '08 (Swarthmore, Pa. / Ridley) Soccer/Basketball
Frank Mazzucco '08 (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow) Lacrosse
Lew Elverson Award –This award is given in honor of Lew Elverson, a professor of physical education fro men from 1937-1978. The award is presented annually to the junior or senior man who has demonstrated commitment and dedication to excellence and has achieved the highest degree of excellence in his sport.
Ian McCormick '08 (Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) Basketball
Kwink Trophy –For many years, the managerial organization known as the Society of Kwink was active on campus, making valuable contributions to the men’s athletics program. In 1951, Kwink established a trophy to be awarded annually to the senior man who best exemplifies the five principles of the Society of Kwink: Service, Spirit, Scholarship, Society, and Sportsmanship.
Pat Christmas '08 (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Chapel Hill East) Soccer
Tim Berman Memorial Award – This award is presented annually to the senior man who best combines qualities of scholarship, athletic skills, artistic sensitivity, respect from influence on peers, courage and sustained commitment to excellence.
