Riley, Sendelsky Named All-Region
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore softball players Kathryn Riley and Christine Sendelsky have been named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region team. Riley is a second-team at-large selection while Sendelsky was placed on the third team, both in the East Region, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Tuesday afternoon.
Riley (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River), a sophomore, was named All-Region for the second straight season; she was on the second team as a utility player in 2007. Riley saw action as a pitcher, at first base and third base in 2008, putting up strong numbers at the plate. She surpassed the numbers put up last season, leading the team in seven offensive categories--batting average (.370), hits (44), doubles (11), home runs (four), RBIs (26) total bases (67), and on-base percentage (.444).
Sendelsky (Edison, N.J. / John P. Stevens), a second baseman, was also selected All-Region for the second time; she was a second-team at-large selection in 2006. Sendelsky, a team captain, recently became the first Swarthmore player to make All-Centennial three times after starting all 39 games for the Garnet, hitting .314 with 38 hits, eight doubles and 16 RBIs. She has started all 114 games in her career at Swarthmore, surpassing the 100-hit mark earlier this season
Swarthmore (21-18 overall, 10-6 Centennial) topped the 20-win mark and participated in the Centennial playoffs for the third consecutive season. The Garnet conclude the 2008 season with the program’s first-ever appearance in the ECAC Division III South Region Tournament, traveling to Gwynedd-Mercy on Wednesday, May 7 for a 4:00 p.m. game.
