Corso Homers, Garnet Split With Red Devils
CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore baseball team (9-21, 3-15 CC) snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 16-13 win in game one against Centennial Conference foe Dickinson (13-23, 6-12 CC) but then fell in game two with a score of 14-3 on Saturday afternoon at MacPhail Field.
Left fielder Ben Schneiderman ’11 (Easton, Pa. / Easton) and third baseman Conor Casey ’09 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) went 3-for-7 with four RBIs a piece in game one.
Swarthmore hit big in the second inning collecting a total of 11 runs. First baseman Matt Corso ’10 (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) (pictured left) got the run going picking up a single, followed by singles from catcher Wiley Archibald ’10 (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) and second baseman Kevin Kooi ’09 (Lafayette, Calif. / Preparatory School). Schneiderman doubled to send all three Garnet runners home to extend the score to 4-2. Casey hit a triple to earn three RBIs pushing his season total to 15. On his second time around Corso singled to have shortstop Thomas Nakamura cross the plate pushing the score to 8-2. The Garnet had back-to-back doubles to make the score 12-2 from Kooi and Dalane for a collection of three RBIs.
In the third inning Corso hit his season’s second home run to push the score to 13-3.
Dickinson had back-to-back four run innings in the sixth and seventh to knot the game at 13-13. But it was the Garnet who scored three runs in the 10th to seal the win. Schneiderman doubled to have Archibald cross the plate making the score 14-13. Dalane scored off a pass ball while Schneiderman scored on a wild pitch to extend the score to 16-13.
Freshman Neil Mejia (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park River Forest) started on the rubber pitching 5.1 innings picking up two strike outs to bring his season total to 45. Justin Chen ’08 (Media, Pa. / Penncrest ) (1-2) pitched four innings in relief while striking out three hitters.
The second game was called short in the bottom of the eighth due to pending darkness. The Red Devils took an early lead of three runs in the first while sealing the win in the bottom of the sixth when they scored an additional five runs.
In the second game Dalane, who leads his team in the RBI category, led the Garnet at the plate going 2-for-4 while picking up his 18th RBI of the season.
Sophomore Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) (1-5) started on the mound in game two pitching 5.2 innings while picking up the loss for the Garnet.
The Garnet will return to the Clothier Fields to host non-conference Misericordia on Sunday, April 27. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
