Bears Take Two in First-Place Battle
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The two top softball teams in the Centennial Conference met at Clothier Fields on a warm spring Thursday afternoon with the possibility of clinching spots in the upcoming Conference playoffs. Visiting Ursinus won both ends of the Centennial doubleheader in convincing fashion, postponing Swarthmore’s quest for a third straight playoff appearance.
The Bears (23-8, 10-2 CC) moved one step closer to hosting the Conference playoffs by winning 7-0 in the first game and 8-0 (five innings) in the nightcap.
Garnet sophomore Kathryn Riley (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) led Swarthmore (19-11, 8-4 CC) with a 2-for-2 effort in the second game.
Swarthmore, which saw its win streak halted at five games, concludes the grueling eight-game week this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when Franklin & Marshall visits for a Centennial doubleheader. The Garnet will hold Senior Day festivities prior to the start, honoring senior captain Katherine Gold (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East).
