Bears Climb Past Garnet
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Ursinus Bears built a lead in the first half and never looked back, winning 14-5 over the Swarthmore Garnet on Thursday evening in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action.
Following three unanswered Ursinus goals to start the game, Swarthmore first-year Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) scored her 35th goal of the season.
Ursinus continued to transition the ball well throughout the game. The closed the first half ahead 10-1.
The Garnet picked up 10 ground balls and registered six caused turnovers during the first half.
The Garnet started out the second half strong, scoring three consecutive goals. Sophomore Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conrad) got the Swarthmore run going with 20:58 on the clock. After a few quick transition passes off the draw control, Anna de Regt ‘09 (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) scored to make it 10-2. With 18:18 left on the clock, midfielder Emily Evans ’11 (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) received a pass from senior defender Megan Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) to score a Garnet goal. It was the team-leading tenth assist of the season for Sanborn.
The Bears answered all three of the Swarthmore’s goals to bring the score to 13-5 before de Regt scored her second goal of the game with 7:43 remaining on the clock.
Between the posts for the Garnet was Susannah Blair ’08 (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day), who collected ten saves of the afternoon and picked up five ground balls.
The Garnet travel to Haverford this Saturday, April 19th for their final game of the season – game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
