Garnet Drop Centennial Contest to Mules

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore baseball team (8-12, 2-7 CC) dropped a 9-2 decision to visiting Muhlenberg (13-13, 3-5 CC) on Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Fields.

At the top of the second Garnet outfielder Scott Dalane ’08 (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) made an impressive driving catch to retire the Muhlenberg hitter. The Garnet defense continued to show defensive strength when second baseman Kevin Kooi ’09 (Lafayette, Calif. / Preparatory School) caught a quick line drive to make the final out of the inning.

The Mules took advantage of a Garnet error in the fourth to assume a four-run lead over Swarthmore. They continued to bat well in the fourth, earning two additional runs to make the score 6-0.

The Garnet first got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Kooi got his first hit of the afternoon.  Kooi then stole second and advanced to third off a wild pitch. Outfielder Ben Schneiderman ’11 (Easton, Pa. / Easton) hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Kooi to make the score 6-1.

The Mules extended their lead in the eighth inning with more three runs. In the bottom of the eighth, Dalane scored the final run of the game off a pass ball.

Swarthmore sophomore Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) started on the mound and pitched four full innings for the Garnet. Gill’s record dropped to 1-3 for the season.

The Garnet will travel to Allentown, Pa. on Friday, April 11 for a 3:30 p.m. game with hopes of spliting the Muhlenberg series.
