Garnet Tennis Rolls Past Bears
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Three Swarthmore women registered wins in singles' and doubles' action as the Garnet tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over Ursinus in Centennial action Wednesday afternoon.
Swarthmore, ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region, won its third consecutive match to improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial.
Sophomore Rachel Wallwork (Washington, D.C. / Georgetown Day) remained undefeated (5-0) at No. 1 singles this spring, defeating Jennifer Hope 6-2, 6-2. She combined with freshman Kathryn Stockbower (Fort Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) to win at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-4.
Stockbower won her first career singles’ match, defeating Johanna Siegel 6-1,6-2 in the No.6 slot.
Freshman Alexis Hickman (Vienna, Va. / George Marshall) also won both of her matches cruising past Pamela Ordorizzi 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles after combing with classmate Luann Cignavitch (Charleston, S.C. / Porter-Gaud School) to win No. 2 doubles 8-5.
The Garnet travel south to Fredericksburg, Va. this weekend for two matches against nationally-ranked opponents. Swarthmore faces 8th-ranked Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m. and then takes on host Mary Washington, ranked seventh in Division III, on Sunday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m.
