Shoremen Take Off in Eighth For Win
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington College Shoremen (5-5, 1-0 CC) downed the Swarthmore in an 8-2 Centennial Conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Athney Field.
Following four great defensive innings played by both teams, Swarthmore (6-6, 0-1 CC) got on the board scoring the first run of the game at the top of the fifth. To get the inning started catcher Wiley Archibald ’10 (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) bunted for a base hit and quickly stole second. Right fielder Ben Schneiderman ’11 (Easton, Pa. / Easton) sacrificed Archibald to third. Senior Scott Dalane ’08 (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) doubled to center, sending in Archibald for his 11th RBI of the season, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Garnet.
The Shoremen took the lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs off three hits. Washington scored six more runs to put them ahead 8-1 going into the final inning.
Garnet pitcher Jimmy Gill ’10 (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) worked the first six innings while allowing only two runs and eight hits. Pitching in relief for the Garnet were Zach Sinemus ’10 (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn) and Adam Koshin ’11 (Oakland, Calif. / Head Royce School).
The Garnet will return to Clothier Fields to host the Shoremen on Friday, March 28-- first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
