Garnet Start Season on a High Note

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Swarthmore (1-0) freshman Emily Evans scored four goals in the 15-2 women's lacrosse season opening victory over the University of Dallas (0-4).

The Garnet opened the game with back to back goals, the first coming at 29:10 from Kelsey Hatzell ’09 (Havertown, Pa. / Havertown) assisted by Alex Gilbert-Bono ’10 (Wellesley, Mass. / St. Mark’s) and then at 28:45 midfielder Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) put one in the net unassisted for her first collegiate goal. Gilbert-Bono registered her second assist of the game when she sent a pass to teammate Amy Vachal ’11 (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) at 25:45 to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Garnet. Evans scored her second goal off a free position at the 24:20 mark. Abbe Muller ’10 (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) and Anna de Regt ’09 (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) both picked up their first unassisted goals of the season while de Regt assisted Gilbert-Bono to push the score to 8-0. Evans scored another unassisted goal with 6:11 remaining in the half and attack Hannah Jaicks ’09 (Ridgewood, N.J. / Dwight-Englewood) scored back-to-back goals to end the half with a score of 10-0.

Garnet attack Marissa Schaffer ’09 (Moreland Hill, Ohio - Laurel School) aided the Swarthmore offense by scoring two goals in the second half. Evans had her final goal of the game from a pass sent in by senior captain Megan Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) at 18:39 to make the score 13-0. De Regt finished the Garnet 15-0 run when scoring off a free position.

Dallas had the final two goals of the game from Christine McFarland and Liz Chadwick.

Garnet net minders Susannah Blair ’09 (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day) and Alison Grein ’10 (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) both collected four saves while Anna Massey picked up three saves for Dallas.

Swarthmore women’s lacrosse will continue their spring break trip tournament when they take on Drew University on Monday, March 10th.
