Garnet Box Up First Centennial Win
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- After more than 23 years of being independent, the Swarthmore men's tennis team took to the courts in their first-ever Centennial Conference match, handily defeating the Muhlenberg Mules in a 9-0 romp.
The win also marked the first collegiate coaching victory for interim head coach Jason Box. He is just the fourth coach in Swarthmore’s storied tennis program
The Garnet routed the Mules in all three doubles matches, with senior Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) and junior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingston, RI / South Kingston) leading the charge at number one doubles with an 8-1 victory over Muhlenberg's Robbie Goldwein and John Osborne. Swarthmore also saw impressive play and hard-hitting in the singles matches, where Shaughnessy (right) stepped up to play No. 1 singles against Goldwein, winning 6-0, 6-2 to remain undefeated in 2008.
Like their classmate, juniors J.J. England (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. / The Benjamin School) and Marc Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day) soundly defeated the Mules' Dan Zakheim and Brian Wenick by scores of 6-4, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively, at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Freshman Mark Wee (Syosset, NY, Syosset) likewise made a strong showing, with a victory over Muhlenberg's John Osborne at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Justin diFeliciantonio (Columbus, Ga. / Hardaway) and freshman Noah Pang (Cambridge, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) contributed to the Garnet victory, defeating Muhlenberg opponents Jonathon Farber and Matt Kral.
Swarthmore (1-1) will be traveling to California over Spring Break to take on a number of California schools, including the top-ranked University of California-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. The next Garnet home match will take place on March 21 at 4:00 p.m., when the men confront Ursinus.
