Junior Success, Violets Down Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Garnet men's team opened up the spring with a fighting spirit, led by junior Kevin Shaughnessy's wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. Unfortunately the visiting Violets of New York University were the ones exiting the Mullan Tennis Center with a 5-4 victory over Swarthmore Saturday evening.
Shaughnessy (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston), away studying abroad during the fall semester, got the spring started right by teaming up with senior Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) for an 8-0 romp over NYU’s Mikhail Gurevich and Craig Berger. Shaughnessy kept rolling in singles’ play, winning the first set over NYU’s Calvin Chou 6-0 before Chou responded with a 6-1 set victory. Shaughnessy beared down in the third set, grinding out a 6-4 decision to win the match.
The Garnet also got gutsy play from junior Marc Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day), who made a strong comeback to win at No. 5 singles over NYU’s Eugene Tsarevskiy by a score of 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Classmate J.J. England (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. / The Benjamin School) rolled out his first victory of the spring, fighting past NYU’s Brett Levin for a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win at No. 4.
Swarthmore (0-1) makes its Centennial Conference debut tomorrow, February 24 at 1:00 p.m. when the Mules of Muhlenberg visit the Mullan Center.
