Violets Top Garnet in Season Opener
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Garnet women's tennis team fell short in a 5-4 loss to New York University in their home opener on Saturday morning in the Mullen Tennis Center. Senior Jamie Midyette picked up a pair of wins for Swarthmore.
Swarthmore started the 2008 season ranked seventh overall in the Atlantic South Region, with doubles team Erica Lukoski ’08 (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) and Rachel Wallwork ’10 (Washington, DC / Georgetown Day) ranked 11th.
Swarthmore held a 2-1 lead after doubles’ action. Jennie Park ’09 (Rockford, Ill. / Guilford) and Luann Cignavitch ’11 (Charleston, S.C. / Poter-Gaud) finished their first match together as a doubles’ team with a 8-3 win over Violets’ junior Stephanie Tu (Greenvale, N.Y. /Roslyn) and senior Jaclyn Manning (Corona del Mar, Calif. / Corona del Mar).
The Garnet pair of Midyette (Chesapeake, Va. / Western Branch) and Marissa Lee '09 (Cary, N.C. / Cary Academy) also picked up a doubles win 8-4 over freshman Lisa Mijovic (Forest Hills, N.Y. / The Nightingale-Bamford School) and junior Jen Gottlieb (Sudbury, Mass. / Gann Academy).
Wallwork bounced back from her doubles match to earn her first win of the season in the No. 1 position for the Garnet. She defeated NYU senior Holly Smith (Troy, Mich. / Troy Athens) by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Also picking up a singles’ win for the Garnet was Midyette, who over took Manning 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 4.
The women’s tennis team will begin their Centennial Conference season on Saturday, March 1 when they host McDaniel at 1:00 p.m.
