Swarthmore Swimmers Split In Chestertown

CHESTERTOWN, Mary. -- The Swarthmore men's swimming team remained undefeated in the second semester, getting two wins from Doug Gilchrist-Scott '09 and Sterling Satterfield '11 while rolling to a 126-77 win at Washington (Mary.) Wednesday night.

The Garnet men maintain its hold on second place in the Centennial Conference by improving to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the CC with their fourth straight dual meet victory.

The Garnet women were not as fortunate, dropping a close 104-101 decision to the Shorewomen as a late rally fell just short. Sophomore All-America Anne Miller (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) posted two wins as Swarthmore dropped to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the Centennial.

Sterling Satterfield ‘11The story of the night was the individual domination by the Garnet men. Gilchrist-Scott (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) swept both freestyle sprints, winning the 50 in 22.41 and then the 100 in 49.80. Satterfield, pictured right, (Durham, N.C. / Charles E. Jordan) continued to build towards Conferences, rolling to four-second victories in the 200 IM (2:05.52) and the 200 breaststroke (2:15.89).

The Swarthmore men held court in the distance freestyle events as senior Andrew Frampton (Silver Spring, Mary. / Gonzaga HS) captured the 1000 in 10:31.28 while junior Stephen Shymon (San Diego, Calif. / U. of San Diego) led Frampton (5:02.04) home in the 500 with a time of 5:00.05.

Miller continued to pick up Centennial wins, breezing to victory in the 1000 freestyle (10:51.28) before leading classmate Casey Osborn (Albany, Calif. / Albany) to a 1-2 Swarthmore finish in the 200 butterfly with a winning time of 2:13.59.

The Garnet women also got wins in the 200 backstroke--Allie Jordan '09 (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna), 2:18.52--and the 200 breaststroke--Stephanie Su '11 (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany Hills), 2:33.17.

The Garnet swim teams have nine days to train before the 2008 Centennial Championships commence on the campus of Franklin & Marshall on Friday, March 22. The Garnet men finished second last season while the women posted a close third.
