Garnet Swim Past Owls

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Garnet women's swim team remained undefeated (4-0) in the Centennial dual-meet season, cruising past Bryn Mawr 113-78 in Ware Pool on Wednesday night. Swarthmore freshman Stepanie Su led the way with a pair of victories (200 IM, 100 breaststroke).

The Garnet women started the night out taking first and second places in the 200-yard medley; Laura Rainey ’09 (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown), Casey Osborn ’10 (Albany, Calif. / Albany), Allie Jordan ’09 (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna ) and Franny Zhang ’08 (Piscataway, N.J. / The Peddie School ) swam a 1:59.61 race time while Melinda Neal ’11 (Austin, Texas), Su (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany Hills), Jennie Lewis ’08 (Darien, Conn. / Darien) and Chelsea Brett ’11 (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) finished right behind the first team at 1:59.78.

Anne Miller ’09 (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) scored points for the Garnet as she finished the 1,000 meter freestyle with a 10:55.48 race time. Following just behind Miller was Allison Bishop ’11 (Macungie, Pa. / Emmaus) who reached the touch pad at 11:07.03. Sophomore Claire Shelden (Lewistown, Mont. / Fergus) won the 50 meter freestyle, gliding home in a time of 25.54. Julia Wrobel ’10 (Lawrenceville, N.J. / Lawrence) swam to a win in the 100 freestyle with a 56.45 race time.

The Su, Lewis and Jordan finished 1-2-3 in the 200 individual medley with times of 2:22.38, 2:22.43 and 2:23.55 respectively.

Osborn took top honors in the 100 butterfly (1:00.52) for the Garnet as she led Miller who finished at 1:01.91 and Laura Rainey '09 (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) had a 1:06.03 finish time.

Closing the meet Jordan picked up her second win of the night swimming in the 100 backstroke (1:05.35).

Both the Swarthmore men and women will take part in the biggest regular season meet of the year on Saturday, February 2 when Gettysburg comes to Ware Pool 2:00 p.m. Fans, be sure to arrive early as the Swarthmore swim program will honor its six seniors before the start of the meet.
