Garnet Open Up Semester In Style

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore swim teams made an impressive return from a six-week lay-off, sweeping Cabrini in a non-conference meet held in Ware Pool Saturday afternoon. The Garnet women (5-2) won 143-105 over the Cabrini women (5-4) while the men (3-4) cruised past the Cavaliers (2-6) by a count of 154-41.

Swarthmore All-America sophomore Anne Miller (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) led the Garnet women with two victories while sophomore Michael Ahn (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) and junior Douglas Gilchrist-Scott (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) added a pair of wins on the men’s side.

Miller’s first win came in the 200 butterfly as she and classmate Casey Osborn (Albany, Calif. / Albany) finished 1-2. Miller finished with a time of 2:12.98 while Osborn touched the wall in 2:15.07. She picked up her second victory in the 500 freestyle, gliding home in a time of 5:30.33. Brett was six seconds back (5:36.54) as the Garnet picked up the top two spots.

Sophomore Claire Shelden (Lewistown, Mont. / Fergus) swam to a win in the 50-yard freestyle (26.00), leading Franny Zhang ’08 (Piscataway, N.J. / The Peddie School) and Brett, who posted times of 26.19 and 26.41, respectively. Freshman Chelsea Brett (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) picked up an early win in 200-yard freestyle (2:03.01) and sophomore Laura Rainey (Arlington, Va. / Lake Braddock) took top honors in the 200 backstroke (2:23.01).

Freshman Stephanie Su (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany Hills) and Sally Chang (Silver Spring, Mary. / Montgomery Blair) finished 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:39.38 and 3:06.05, respectively.

Swimming exhibition, Garnet senior Jennie Lewis (Darien, Conn. / Darien) posted the best time in the 100 butterfly (1:03.76) and Osborn did the same in the 200 IM (2:27.02).

On the men’s side, Swarthmore senior Andrew Frampton (Silver Spring, Mary. / Gonzaga College HS) clocked in with a 10:24.65 time in the 1000 yard mixed freestyle, an event swam in exhibition.

Ahn’s first win came in the 200 freestyle (1:50.81) and he later posted a time of 2:11.19 in the 200 IM, an event swam in exhibition.

Gilchrist-Scott led a Swarthmore sweep in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.69 and then turned over and zipped to a win in the 100 freestyle (50.01). Freshman Sterling Satterfield (Durham, N.C. / Jarlden) out-kicked a Cabrini challenger to win the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:03.58.

Junior Tom Kelleher (Brockton, Mass. / Moses Brown) and sophomore Guy Seaton (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) locked horns in the 200 backstroke. Kelleher (2:09.13). all the way out in Lane 1, touched the wall just before Seaton (2:09.49), in Lane 5, to pick up the win.
Garnet sophomore Kyle Skolfield (Liberty Township, Ohio / Seven Hills) beat Heagy by a hair (2:24.22 – 2:24.89) in the 200 breaststroke while junior Stephen Shymon (San Diego, Calif. / Univ. of San Diego) cruised home in a time of 5:05.39 to win the 500 freestyle.

Garnet junior Brian Roth (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) was the top finisher (54.72) in the 100 butterfiy--another event swam in exhibition.

Senior John Heagy (Corapolis, Pa. / Sewickley) out-dueled Garnet freshman Santiago Lombo (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) in the 200 butterfly, coming home in a time of 2:10.55.

The Garnet women began the day with a win in the 200 medley relay—Rainey, Su, Osborn and sophomore Julia Wrobel (Lawrenceville, N.J. / Lawrence) posted a time of 1:59.67. The women’s 200 freestyle relay then closed the day with a 1:47.32 time—the team consisted of Rainey, freshman Allison Bishop (Macungle, Pa. / Emmaus), freshman Melinda Neal (Austin, Texas / McCallum), and Zhang.

The men’s relay also had success on Saturday afternoon, as the quartet of Seaton, Satterfield, Roth and Ahn captured the 200 medley (1:44.02).

The Garnet women will host Bryn Mawr this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Both the Swarthmore men and women will take part in the biggest regular season meet of the year on Saturday, February 2 when Gettysburg comes to Ware Pool 2:00 p.m. Fans, be sure to arrive early as the Swarthmore swim program will honor its six seniors before the start of the meet.
