Stockbower Continues Assault on Record Books, Garnet Fall to Washington

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Freshman forward Kathryn Stockbower's (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) 34 points and 17 rebounds were not enough as the Washington Shorewomen came away with an 81-71 win over Swarthmore in Tarble Gymnasium.

Stockbower displayed her trademark low-post skills and tenacity on the offensive glass all night long, going 12-22 from the field, 10-12 from the line, and grabbing 11 offensive boards.

The first half illustrated the contrasting styles of the two teams. Washington opened with a four-guard lineup and full-court press on defense, while Swarthmore looked to get the ball inside to Stockbower and Karen Berk ’08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford). The Shorewomen relied on their outside shooting, taking eleven three-pointers to the Garnet’s four, while the Garnet held a 22-18 edge in points in the paint.

Swarthmore jumped out to a 14-7 lead before sophomore Jane O’Donnell (Cape May Court House / Wildwood Catholic), Washington’s leading scorer at 14.7 ppg, heated up from deep. O’Donnell knocked down treys on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to one, and two Brenda Lucas ’08 (New London, Pa. / Avon Grove) free throws gave the Shorewomen their first lead, 15-14, with 13:31 on the clock. The teams passed the lead back and forth for several minutes until another O’Donnell triple stretched the Shorewomen lead to five at 25-20.

Berk stole a pass and went the distance for a layup with 4:14 left, tying the game at 31. Another mini-run gave the visitors a 6-point edge, but two Stockbower free throws brought the Garnet back within four, 39-35, at the break, with Berk and Stockbower having accounted for the Garnet’s final 23 points.

It was 46-40, Washington, early in the second half before Stockbower scored eight straight—three layups and a two free throws—to give the Garnet a two-point lead. The Shorewomen retook the lead, but freshman Ceylon Bodur (Istanbul, Turkey / Robert College) hit a twisting up-and-under scoop shot to knot the score at 52 with 10:13 on the clock. The weeknight crowd went wild.

But Washington would go to hit six of their next seven from the field, quieting the crowd and opening up a 15-point lead. Good ball movement gave Shorewomen guard Jessica Jamrogowicz '10 (Marlton, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) open looks from deep, and the sophomore responded by hitting three straight from beyond the arc. The final trey gave the visitors a 72-57 lead with 4:26 left.

Consecutive three-point plays by Berk and Stockbower got the Garnet within nine, but the Shorewomen made five of six from the line down the stretch to maintain their lead.

Washington senior guard Elise Conway (Silver Spring, Md. / Paint Branch), the Centennial Conference’s assist leader at 4.6 per game, was all over the stat sheet on this night, leading the Shorewomen with 18 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. O’Donnell added 17 points, Jamrogowicz put in 15, and Lucas had 10.

Berk hit a number of midrange jumpers on the way to a strong 16-point, eight-rebound performance. Sophomore captain Pam Costello (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) joined Bodur with eight points and added a team-high four assists.

Stockbower is now tied with Lisl Cochran-Bond ’97 for third on the all-time school single-game scoring list, a point of ahead of teammate Berk. She was also one point shy of tying the Centennial record for most points in a single-game by a freshman--Stockbower ranks second behind Kim Selemba from Dickinson.

Swarthmore will look to get back in the win column in Collegeville, Pa. on Saturday, January 26. Tip-off time at Ursinus College is 1:00 p.m.
