Dickinson Writes Off Garnet
CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Dickinson men's basketball ball team held Swarthmore to 23.1% shooting in the first half on the way to a 69-52 Centennial win Saturday afternoon. The Garnet fell to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in the Centennial while the Red Devils improve to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the Conference.
Swarthmore senior center Ian McCormick (Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) surpassed the 20-point plateau for the fourth time this season, leading all scorers with 22 points. He shot 8-of-16 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc while also collecting a team-high nine rebounds.
Dickinson junior guard Kizmahr Grell (Laurenlton, N.Y. / The Gunnery) led the Red Devils with 19 points on four-of-eight shooting from three-point land, while classmate Mike Geosits (Emmaus, Pa. / Emmaus) collected a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
An early 7-0 Red Devil run put the hometown team in front 13-7 as forward Tom Leszczynski (Babalon, N.Y. / St. Anthony’s) scored on a lay-in at 12:10. A McCormick lay-up and a triple from Swarthmore senior guard Matt Kurman (Rockville, Mary. / Walter Johnson) brought the Garnet within two points (13-11) at 11:26.
Dickinson tightened on the defensive end, limiting Swarthmore to just one basket over the next nine minutes. The Red Devils opened up a 24-point lead by halftime, led by 11 points from Grell.
Dickinson developed a 25-15 rebounding margin while holding the Garnet to just 23.1% shooting from the field in the first half. The halftime score read 40-16, Dickinson.
Swarthmore made a push late in the second half to get within 13 points following a pair of free throws from freshman forward Sam Lacy (Jericho, Vt. / Jericho).
McCormick paced the Swarthmore offensive attack with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. He continues to creep up the rebounding annuals, currently possessing 651 career boards for third-most all-time at Swarthmore and top-15 in Centennial history.
The Garnet return home on Wed., January 16 for a Centennial match-up with the Gettysburg Bullets. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. Swarthmore will look to snap a seven-game losing skid against the Bullets (9-2 overall, 4-1 CC)—the last Garnet victory over Gettysburg came on January 17, 2004 by a score of 68-62 in central Pennsylvania.
