Stockbower Earns Eighth Double-Double in a Row
RADNOR, Pa. -- The Cabrini Cavaliers (6-4) beat the visiting Swarthmore Garnet 77-61 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday night, despite Kathryn Stockbower scoring a career high 24 points. Stockbower posted her eighth double-double in a row with her 24 points and 16 rebounds.
Cabrini went on a 10-2 run to start the game. Garnet captain Pam Costello ’10 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) made a lay up at 17:41 to get Swarthmore (4-5) on the board.
Swarthmore finally broke Cabrini’s full court press defense when Lisa Shumacher ’10 (Middlebury, Conn. / Westover) drained a three-pointer at 15:35 to make the point tally 12-6.
At 13:08 Swarthmore freshman Kathryn Stockbower (Fort Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) blocked a shot from Cavalier junior Rachel Caron (Warrington, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) and grabbed the rebound to send the ball back down to the Swarthmore end. After getting fouled, the freshman made the two free throws to bring the score to 12-8.
Cabrini sophomore Katie Finfrock (Drexel Hill, Pa. / Haverford) picked up a rebound and made a jumper; following a Swarthmore turnover Finfrock completed her five-point run with a three-pointer to push the Cavalier lead to 27-10 at 8:43.
Cabrini closed the half well, going on a 15-8 run in the last six minutes in the first.
During the first half Cabrini’s lead was due to their shooting from beyond the arc (making 6 of 11). At the end of first half the score was in favor of the home team, 43-22.
Swarthmore came out of the locker room with a purpose the Garnet controlled possession on their side of the court for the first minutes of the half grabbing numerous offensive rebounds. Stockbower picked up six points and four rebounds to aid the Garnet while they brought the point deficient to 45-30. Cabrini answered Swarthmore’s aggressive start with a 7-0 point run.
Garnet captain Karen Berk ’08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) broke out in the second half, making six of the eight points as Swarthmore brought the score to 52-38 at 13:04. As the back and forth game continued, Cabrini junior Kate Fetterman (Eagleville, Pa. / Methacton) made back-to-back lay ups.
At 9:05 Stockbower checked back into the game for the Garnet, after sitting out due to her foul trouble. Stepping out on the court she instantly made her presence known as she made a lay up for the Garnet. Melissa Grigsby ‘09 (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) checked in for the Garnet for the first time this season as she missed the first half semester while she pursued a study abroad program. Grigsby received a great pass from Stockbower to sink her second jumper of the game making the score 68-50.
Swarthmore finished strong with a five-point run to end with a final score of 77-61.
Swarthmore controlled Cabrini’s leading scorer, sophomore Deana DiAmico (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy), who averages 10.7 points per game; she only scored three points in tonight’s game.
The Garnet out-rebounded the Cavaliers 47-33, while they made 10 second chance points. There were no lead changes during the game once the Cavaliers took control of the ball in the first possession of the game.
Swarthmore returns to their home court after not playing in Tarble Pavilion since November 27th to host Franklin & Marshall at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 9.
