Swarthmore Trio Selected All-Region
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore women's soccer players Caitlin Mullarkey '09 and Lauren Walker '09, and freshman Megan Colombo have been named to the 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All Mid-Atlantic Region team. Mullarkey was named to the second team while Walker and Colombo were third-team.
Mullarkey earns All-Region status for the second straight season (she made third-team in 2006) while Walker and Colombo have been selected for the first time. Swarthmore has received five All-Region selections in the past two years (Katie Kanuka ’10 made third-team in 2006 as well).
Mullarkey, a defender, started all 19 games while leading a Garnet defense that set four Centennial records this season (including 13 shutouts) and finished third in Division III with a 0.301 goals-against average. For the third consecutive year, Mullarkey was an All-Centennial first-team selection—she is the first Swarthmore soccer player (only fourth defender in Centennial history) to accomplish the feat—and was named Most Outstanding Player after leading the Garnet to the program’s first Eastern Collegiate Athletics Conference (ECAC) Division III Southern Region Championship.
Mullarkey, a team captain and Honors Biology major, has been recognized off the field as well. She was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team, ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II third team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and placed on the Centennial Academic Honor Roll for a second straight year.
Walker, a goaltender, ranked second in all of Division III in goals-against average (a Centennial-record 0.27) and save percentage (.915). Walker made 19 starts, posting a 14-2-3 record while leading the Centennial in goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts per game (0.53). She received her second All-Centennial selection, a first-team nod—Walker was honorable mention in 2006—after tying the Conference record for solo shutouts (10). She was named Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4 after being selected All-Tournament at the 2007 Swat Kick Classic.
Colombo, a forward, made 19 starts and led the Garnet in points (22) and goals (nine) while finishing second in assists (four). She finished tied for fourth in the Centennial in goals and fifth in points per game (1.21). Colombo was just the 16th freshman to make First Team All-Centennial and recorded her first career hat trick in a 4-0 win over Ursinus on Oct. 17. Colombo was also selected All-Tournament at the Swat Kick Classic.
The Garnet women posted a record of 14-2-3 this season, made a second consecutive appearance in the Centennial Conference playoffs and earned its first-ever national ranking, peaking at #18 in the NSCAA poll.
