Greyhounds Kick Past Garnet
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Moravian guard Ryan Miller scored a game-high 13 points and Chris Early added 11 as the Greyhounds (7-2) topped Swarthmore 70-51 in non-conference basketball action Monday night at Johnson Hall.
Garnet senior guard Matt Kurman (Rockville, Md. / Walter Johnson) led Swarthmore (2-6) with 10 points while classmate Ian McCormick (Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) added nine points and six rebounds.
The night started promising for the Garnet as senior forward Steve Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) made a steal and scored the first bucket of the game. Moravian quickly scored the next 12 points to open a 10-point advantage at 14:54.
The hometown team showed off its long-range shooting (8 for 16 in the first half), drilling four triples in a two-minute span to open up a 32-14 lead after Miller’s second trey of the night at 8:14.
Swarthmore freshman forward Sam Lacy (Jericho, Vt. / Jericho) ended the run with a triple of his own—he is shooting 50% (5 of 10) on the season from beyond the arc.
Moravian maintained its double-digit lead throughout the half with Miller sinking his third 3-pointer of the half in the final minute to put the Greyhounds up 44-28. Garnet freshman Ryan Carmichael (Portland, Maine / Portland) picked up a loose ball and scored just before the half ended to make it 44-30 Moravian at the intermission.
Swarthmore got as close as nine points in the second half using 11 combined points from Kurman and junior forward Raul Ordonez (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit).
The Greyhounds responded with a 12-1 run of their own to seal up the team’s sixth straight win. Moravian ended the night with a 41-33 advantage on the glass.
Swarthmore will go 25 days before its next game, taking time off for finals and the holiday break. The Garnet return to the hardwood on January 4-5, 2008 when they play in the Roanoke College Tournament in Virginia. Swarthmore opens the two-day tournament against Ferrum (Va.) on January 4 at 5:00 p.m. and will return to Tarble Pavilion on January 9 for 7:00 p.m. Centennial contest with Franklin & Marshall.
