Cross Country Finishes Season at Regional Championships
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Swarthmore's cross country teams made strong showings in the NCAA Division III Regional hosted by Muhlenberg College Saturday afternoon to culminate the 2007 season. The women finished in 6th with 53 points, while the men placed in 8th with 326 points.
Dickinson captured the women's championship with 53 points followed by Haverford (110), Johns Hopkins (138), Elizabethtown (141), Allegheny (166), and Grove City who also ended up with a score of 53 (Swarthmore held the tie-breaker over Grove City) as 37 teams participated in the race.
Swarthmore placed four runners in the top-50 led by sophomore Nyika Corbett (Myrtle Point, Ore. / Myrtle Point), who placed in 32nd with a time of 22:58. Corbett??s performance earned her a spot on the All Mid-East Region team for the second time in as many years. Emma Stanley ??09 (Fogelsville, Pa. / Parkland) (40th place), Ashley Davies ??10 (New Providence, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) (42nd place), and Caitlin Russell ??11 (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) (44th place) finished within six seconds of each other with times of 23:03, 23:07, and 23:09, respectively. Russell??s showing qualified her for a spot on the 1st Team All Mid-East Freshman team. Kathy Feeney ??09 (Staatsburg. N.Y. / FDR) crossed the line in 54th with a time of 23:37. Bess Ritter ??09 (Quaker Hill, Conn. / Waterford) (23:53) and Lauren DeLuca ??10 (Audubon, Pa. / Kennedy-Kendrick) (24:17) rounded out the times for the Garnet.
On the men??s side, rival Haverford secured the team win with 45 points. Allegheny was in second with 52 points followed by Carnegie Mellon (71), Dickinson (108), Johns Hopkins (185), Salisbury (251), and Muhlenberg (278)--41
Erik Saka ??09 (Quincy, Ill. / Quincy) crossed the line first for Swarthmore in 37th place overall with a time of 26:08. Senior classmates Ross Weller (McConnellsburg, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy) (44th place) and Jon Shoop (Incline Village, Nev. / Incline) (77th place) clocked in next for the Garnet with times of 26:21 and 26:49, respectively. Freshmen Patrick Harnett (Syracuse, N.Y. / Westhill) made his regional debut in 81st registering a time of 26:53. He earned a position on the 2nd Team All Mid-East Freshman team. Dan Hodson ??09 (Trumbull, Conn. / Fairfield Prep) (27:02), Micky Katz ??08 (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) (27:04), and Alex Frye ??11 (Bourbonnais, Ill. / Bishop McNamara) (27:35) completed the lineup for the Garnet.
