Swarthmore Runs Clear in Central PA

CARLISLE, Pa. - Swarthmore senior Ross Weller (McConnellsburg, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy) led the Garnet men's cross country with a 15th place finish at the Dickinson Long/Short Course Invitational. The men, along with the women, finished the event sixth in the team competition.
Crossing the line after Weller on the 4K course was junior Erik Saka (Quincy, Ill./ University of Chicago Lab School), who finished in 13:02, while senior Mickey Katz (Stevens Point, Wis./ Stevens Point Area) finished next at 13:04. Patrick Harnett '11 (Syracuse, N.Y./ Westhill) marked a 13:09 race while finishing 35th overall. As the 41st runner, Garnet sophomore Jonnie Tompkins (Swarthmore, Pa./ Strath Haven) posted a time of 13:19.
The Swarthmore men finished sixth as a team, while five Garnet runners were in the top 45.
Garnet runner Ashley Davies '10 (New Providence, N.J./ Hunterdon Central) ran a 15:42 to lead the women. A few steps behind was Emma Stanley '09 (Fogelsville, Pa./ Parkland) who had a finishing time of 15:42. Caitlin Russell '11 (Mountain View, Calif./ Los Altos) placed 26th with a 15:48 finish while senior Kathy Feeney (Staatsburg, N.Y. / FDR) covered the course in 16:02 placing 34th.
With nine runners placing in the top 50, the Garnet women finished the day sixth overall out of 20 teams.
A small pack of Garnet runners completed their race together, taking the 40th-43rd places: Nyika Corbett '10 (Myrtle Point, Ore./ Myrtle Point) at 16:11, sophomore Lauren DeLuca (Audubon, Pa./ Kennedy-Kendrick) at 16:11, Bess Ritter '09 (Quaker Hill, Conn./ Waterford) at 16:14 and Ada Okun '11 (New York City, N.Y./ Stuyvesant) at 16:15.
The Swarthmore men's cross country team will travel to Center Valley, Pa. on Saturday, Oct. 13 to run in the DeSales University Invitational while the women head to Massachusetts to take part in the Seven Sisters Invitational.
