Greyhounds Rally Past Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -Swarthmore junior outside hitter Jen Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) posted her fourth double-double of the season, including a season-high 18 kills, yet visiting Moravian took home a 3-1 win Tuesday night in Tarble Pavilion. The Greyhounds won by scores of 16-30, 30-21, 30-25, and 30-27.
The Garnet (2-5) looked impressive in the first game, using a .324 hitting percentage (13 kills, two errors in 34 attempts) to roll.
Moravian (7-3) righted the ship in game two, hitting at their own .300 clip (20 kills, five errors in 50 attempts) to even the overall match. The teams went back and forth in muggy Tarble in the final two games, with the Greyhounds using 63 total kills to claim victory.
Swarthmore sophomore Kearney Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) racked up 22 assists while first-year Sarah Lambert (Darlington, Pa. / Blackhawk) contributed a career-high 23 assists to pace the offense.. Junior captain Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors) paced the defense with 22 digs while Wang chipped in 17. Middle hitter Karen Berk '08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) played well at the net with six kills and five blocks.
Swarthmore returns to Tarble Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 15 for the fifth annual Garnet Classic. Five other teams will spend the weekend at Swarthmore attempting to keep the Garnet from their first Classic title in three seasons. Swarthmore takes the court at 2:00 p.m. against Rutgers-Newark, the 2005 Classic champion.
