Fords Chill Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore freshman Jimmy Gill picked up his team-leading 18th RBI of the season as visiting Haverford defeated the Garnet 5-1 on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Clothier Fields. The Fords improve to 15-9 overall and 6-5 in the Centennial while Swarthmore dips to 3-20 overall and 1-12 in the Conference.
The Fords, wearing the bright road reds, took a 2-0 lead in the third when senior Ben Field lined a one-out triple down the right-field line to bring home sophomore Jamie Hollowell and freshman Jeff Rickert. Fords senior Ben Einbinder ripped the first pitch he saw into left to plate Field for 3-0 Haverford advantage and the visitors picked up a fourth run when Einbinder scored on freshman Rob Crabtree's pop fly behind first base.
Swarthmore responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of its own. Gill jumped on a first pitch fastball, lining a double over the leftfielder's head to drive in Scott Dalane '08, who had reached on a leadoff walk. Gill has driven in a run in six of the last seven games and owns a .345 (10 for 29) batting average with runners in scoring position.
Five Haverford pitchers combined to strike out 10 Swarthmore hitters while allowing only three hits. Senior Danny Poster (2-2) picked up the win after pitching three scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts.
Sean Varsalona (1-6) took the loss for the Garnet, allowing only two earned runs in seven innings pitched.
Swarthmore completes the home-and-home affair with Haverford on Friday, April 20 in Haverford, Pa. at 3:30 p.m. The Garnet return home on Saturday April 21 for a doubleheader with Gettysburg, slated to start at 12:30 p.m.
