Garnet Move Up to #14, Roll Past Shorewomen
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Swarthmore women's tennis team celebrated a higher national ranking by rolling past Centennial foe Washington 8-1 Sunday afternoon. Rachel Wallwork '10, Sara Sargent '07, Waverly Lutz '07 and Erica Lukoski '08 picked up wins in singles and doubles action for the Garnet.
The Garnet (5-3 overall, 3-1 CC) were ranked 14th in the country in the most recent FILA ITA Division III women's tennis rankings, released on March 30.
Lukoski and doubles partner Marissa Matthews '07 made quick work of Washington's Rebecca Davis and Carrie Palmer at No. 3 doubles, winning by a score of 8-0. Sargent and classmate Sonya Reynolds, the second-ranked doubles team in the Atlantic South Region, zipped past 27th-ranked Allison Daciek and Kellie Foster 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Lutz and Wallwork completed the Swarthmore doubles' sweep with an 8-3 decision over Lydia Bull and Kate Barston in the No. 2 pairing.
Singles' action was also controlled by the visiting Garnet: junior Jamie Midyette defeated Sarah Macht 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 and Sargent easily downed Foster 6-2, 6-1 to put Swarthmore up 5-0, ensuring the victory.
Lutz flew past Palmer, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Wallwork (ranked 29th in the region) fought past Daciek at No. 1 6-2, 7-6 (4) and Lukoski closed out the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ryoko Sawada at No. 6.
The Garnet will host two matches this week; Ursinus on Wed., April 4 at 3:30 p.m. and then 10th-ranked Mary Washington on Friday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m.
