Garnet Win Mid-Atlantic Juniors
BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Swarthmore badminton team opened up the 2006-07 season by winning the Collegiate Trophy at the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Juniors Tournament held in Schwarz Gymnasium on the campus of Bryn Mawr College.
The Garnet dominated the tournament, winning the both singles' draws and doubles' draws while collecting 33 total team points to claim the overall title. Haverford was second with 24 points, followed by Bryn Mawr and Drexel (22 points apiece) and George Washington (six points).
The main singles draw saw three Swarthmore women (Patricia Kelly '08, Candice Cherk '07, and Kim Kramer '10) make the semi-finals. In an all-Garnet final, Kramer defeated Cherk for the singles' title. Swarthmore sophomore Karma Lama claimed the title in the B draw of the singles' competition.
Kramer and Cherk rolled through four teams, including a 21-9, 21-7 drubbing in the finals, to win the main draw in the doubles event. Kelly and Lama defeated teammates Mu Yang '07 and Heather Hightower '09 to claim victory in the B draw of the doubles competition.
The Garnet return to competition on January 30 with a contest at Bryn Athyn.
