Swarthmore Swimmers Remain Perfect in the Centennial

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Garnet swim teams remained undefeated in Centennial dual meet action this season, sweeping past home-standing Ursinus on Tuesday evening.  The Swarthmore women won 143-111 while the men claimed victory by a score of 138-83.

The Garnet women (4-1 overall, 3-0 CC) won 11 of the first 12 events before the meet was decided and the races became exhibitions.  The 200 medley relay of Allie Jordan '09, Janie Yeo '07, Katie Schmidt '07, and Sarah Cotcamp '07 got the night started with a first-place finish in a time of 1:56.71.  Freshman Anne Miller posted wins in the 200 freestyle (2:04.44) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.38) while junior Franny Zhang took first place in the 50 freestyle (26.81) and 500 freestyle (5:34.90).  Swarthmore saw many winners on this night: freshman Casey Osborn claimed victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:42.11), Yeo wrapped up the 100 breaststroke (1:12.16), sophomore Laura Rainey took top honors in the 100 backstroke (1:05.84), senior Sarah Gordon was first in the 200 butterfly (2:25.77), Cotcamp beat all comers in the 100 free style (55.50), and Schmidt won the 200 backstroke (2:22.83).

The Swarthmore men (4-1 overall, 3-0 CC) enjoyed much of the same success, as the 200 medley relay team won the opening event in a time of 1:40.83 (breaking the pool record at Ursinus) and the Garnet reeled off three more victories to assume control of the meet.  Sophomore Douglas Gilchrist-Scott picked up a pair of victories in the 100 (51.98) and 200 freestyle (1:53.74) while classmate Stephen Shymon swam to first place in the 500 freestyle (5:06.22).  The Garnet also got wins from Jason Horwitz '07 in the 100 backstroke (59.43) and Andrew Frampton in the 200 butterfly (2:08.55).

The Garnet return to competition on Dec.2-3, participating in the annual Franklin & Marshall Invitational in Lancaster, Pa.
