Lady Generals Edge Past Garnet For Swat Tip Off Championship
SWARTHMORE, Pa - Washington & Lee guard Kristen Krouchick (Holland, PA / Nazareth Academy) scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead her Lady Generals (2-0) past the Swarthmore Garnet (1-1) 52-45 in the championship game of the ninth annual Swarthmore Tip Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Tarble Pavilion.
Krouchick was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after totaling 34 points in two games - the junior shot five for eight from three-point land and added 14 rebounds. Krouchick was joined on the All-Tourney squad by sophomore teammate Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, NJ / Academy of Holy Angels). The Generals' sophomore guard provided a spark off the bench with 10 points in both contests, including a key fast break lay-up with 2:05 left in the game to give W&L a five-point advantage in would not relinquish.
The Garnet were led by All-Tournament selection Karen Berk (Havertown, PA / Haverford) who scored a team-high 11 points with a game-high 15 rebounds and seven blocks. Berk, a junior center, totaled 26 points, 32 rebounds, 10 blocks, and eight steals over two games to earn her second consecutive All-Tournament nod.
Eastern (1-1) defeated CCNY (0-2) 58-29 in the consolation game. Eagles' freshman guard Emily Reeser tallied a game-high 20 points and junior Mandy Kulken chipped in 14 points as the Eastern defense limited CCNY to eight points in the second half. Senior guard Raya Shores (Athens, PA / Athens Area) was named to the All-Tournament team after totaling in 25 points in two games.
The Beavers' sophomore forward Johanna Ortiz (Deer Park, NY / Deer Park) earned All-Tournament status after posting 20 points, 18 rebounds, and five steals in two games over the weekend.
