Men’s Lacrosse: #10 Washington Slides Past Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Will Predun had an assist and a goal while senior Matt Perez and junior Jay Charles also added scores as #10 Washington defeated Swarthmore 8-3 on Wednesday evening at Clothier Field.
Garnet sophomore goalie Frank Mazzucco made 12 saves in goal for Swarthmore (4-9, 1-6 CC).
The Shoremen (12-2, 6-2 CC) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period with the lone Garnet tally coming on an unassisted goal by Predun at 8:46. It is the seventh goal of the season by Predun.
Washington put up another trio of scores in the second period to open a 6-1 lead at the intermission. Shoremen middie Andrew Ostrusky scored his 24th goal of the season with 3:56 left in the third period to give Washington a 7-1 advantage headed into the final period.
Perez scored the second Swarthmore goal at the 7:20 mark in the fourth taking pass from Predun at the right post and succesfully juked Shoremen goaltender Kevin Thibadeau for his ninth goal of the season.
Charles whipped a left-handed shot into the net at 4:48 for the third Garnet goal; it is the 17th goal of the season for the junior captain, tops of the team.
The Shoremen out-shot Swarthmore 30-23 and held a slight 20-19 edge in ground balls.
The Garnet conclude the 2006 season on Saturday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m., welcoming long-time rival Haverford to Clothier Field. The annual Swarthmore-Haverford alumni game will take place before the varsity contest, with the first face-off set for 11:00 a.m.
