Garnet Rally Falls Short In Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa.- Swarthmore scored eight runs in the top of the ninth, but Muhlenberg was able to hold of the Garnet 16-11 in Centennial Conference action on Friday afternoon.

The Garnet drop to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial while the Mules improve to 9-8 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial.

Sophomore infielder Patrick Christmas led Swarthmore with a 3-for-5 performance that included two runs scored and an RBI. Christmas has collected a hit in 12 of the 13 games in 2006, including a run of seven straight through Friday. Over that seven game stretch, Christmas is hitting .357 with eight runs and seven RBIs - he now has a team-high 14 RBIs on the season.

Junior outfielder Ian Adelstein also had a solid day for the Garnet, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs while freshman second baseman Kevin Kooi collected two hits in four at bats, driving in a pair of runs. Junior Sam Faeder also had two hits and two runs to extend his hit-streak to 15 games while senior Scott Young added a pair of hits and a run.

The Garnet pounded out a season-high 18 hits on the day with nine different players registering an RBI.

Freshman Sean Varsolona (2-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 5.0 innings. Varsolona struck out six Mules while walking only one.

The Garnet return to action tomorrow afternoon, welcoming 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins to Clothier Field for a 12:30 Centennial doubleheader.
