3/25: Garnet Power Surges Swarthmore to Sweep
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Junior Kelly Siano had a career-day on Saturday, going 6-for-8 including her first career home run as the Garnet (8-5) swept Penn State-Berks at a drizzly Clothier Fields. Swarthmore won game one 10-2 and continued to roll in the second contest, winning by a score of 12-4.
The streaking Garnet are off to their best start since the 1990 Swarthmore club began the season 8-2.
The ball was soaring on the chilly afternoon as Siano, sophomore Katie Gold, and senior Danielle Miller all hit round-trippers in game one. Swarthmore got four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, rapping out 15 hits in the process.
Looking through records dating back to 1940, this appears to be the first time in school history the Garnet have hit three home runs in the same game.
Siano was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in game one, slugging a towering drive over the centerfield fence to lead of the second inning with her first career home run. Gold's one-out four-bagger (also the first of her collegiate career) in the fifth went over the same sport as Siano's. Miller led off the sixth with a frozen rope over the left field fence for her second career round-tripper.
Righthander Emily Walz '08 allowed four hits while striking out three batters to earn her third win of the season in the first game.
Swarthmore took game two, 12-4, behind six strikeouts from freshman Alexandra Zelaski. Freshman sensation Christine Sendelsky led the offense with a perfect 4-for-4, four-RBI (a career-high) performance while classmate Kristin Caspar totaled a career-high three hits.
Sendelsky continues her torrid pace, most recently collecting 10 hits in her last 11 at bats and has reached base 12 of her last 13 plate appearances.
The Garnet return to action on Sunday, hosting Arcadia in a 1:00 p.m doublheader on Clothier Fields.
