#1 Santa Cruz Slugs Garnet
SANTA CRUZ , Calif -- Swarthmore faced a Division III opponent for the first time in 2006 on Monday afternoon, yet the defending national champion and current top-ranked UC-Santa Cruz provided little relief for the Garnet. The Banana Slugs (5-2, 3-1 Div. III) rolled past Swarthmore (0-5, 0-1 Div. III) by a score of 6-1.
Garnet junior Jon Reiss, ranked fourth in the Atlantic South region, continued his stellar play of late, winning at No. 2 singles 6-2, 7-5 over UC-Santa Cruz's Shane Templeman, ranked sixth in the West Region and 40th in all of Division III in 2005.
The match of the day took place at No. 1 singles, with Swarthmore's Zac Rodd facing off against the top-ranked player in Division III, two-time NCAA singles champion Matt Seeberger. Seeberger took the first set 6-4, but Rodd battled back to win the second set 7-6. With the overall match decided, the two played a the third as a super set, and Seeberger prevailed 1-0 (5).
The Garnet will be back on the court on Tuesday, March 7 when they face UC-Davis at 1:30 p.m. (PCT).
