Garnet Send Generals Out with the Tide
Swarthmore women (4-3, 2-1 CC) dominated the pool Saturday afternoon, taking all but four of the fourteen events from Washington and Lee University 156-106. Franny Zhang '08 blew her competition out of the water, taking all three individual events she swam, and also contributed to a relay victory. Jennie Lewis '08 delivered another exceptional performance, capturing victories in each of her events, while Michele Hom '07 also refused to relinquish a single event. Sarah Cotcamp '07, Martyna Pospieszalska '06, and Patricia Funk '06 each did their part to ensure a clean Swarthmore victory.
The Garnet women opened up with a win in the first event. Pospieszalska, Hom, Lewis, and Cotcamp combined to take the 200 yard medley (1:55.87). Lewis, Cotcamp, Funk, and Zhang definitively won the 400 yard freestyle relay, coming in six seconds before their closest competitor (3:48.17).
The meet was filled with team accomplishments, as well as individual ones. Lewis swept the butterfly events, taking the 100 yard in 1:01.99 and the 200 yard in 2:15.61, denying any swimmer the opportunity to best her. Zhang monopolized her freestyle events, taking the 100 yard in 55.73, the 200 yard in 2:00.36, and 500 yard in 5:33.87. Cotcamp also took a freestyle event, finishing the 50 yard in 25.87. Hom took the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:12.27, and came from behind to win the 200 yard breaststroke (2:35.70).
The Garnet women will host Centennial foe Bryn Mawr (PA) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Ware Pool. The meet begins at 6:30 p.m.
