Garnet Chill Fords 3-1

Swarthmore scored twice at the end of the first half on its way to a 3-1 Tuesday night victory over Haverford on a wet Senior Night at Clothier Field.

The Fords got on the board first, cleaning up a errant rebound for the 1-0 lead with 19:47 left in the first half. Forward Colleen Farrell fired a shot at Garnet goalie Melissa LaVan '07, who made a kick save. The ball caromed right to the stick of junior midfielder Abby Scattergood, who flicked the ball past LaVan for her sixth goal of the season.

Swarthmore took over late in the first half, grabbing a 2-1 lead on goals by senior midfielder Charlotte MacAusland and junior midfielder Lindsay Roth. The first goal came on a Garnet corner. MacAusland knocked the ball out to Jessica Larson '06, who immediately sent a return pass to the left post. MacAusland had set up shop on the post and smoothly tipped the ball into the goal for her fourth goal of the season.

The second goal was all about effort on the part of Roth. The midfielder controlled the ball on her stick with her back to the goal. She turned on her heel and momentarily lost control of the ball. Roth then dove headfirst and swung her stick backhanded, cracking the ball into the back of the cage at 2:17 to give Swarthmore the 2-1 lead going into halftime.

The Garnet put up another goal ten minutes into the second half. Senior forward Heidi Fieselmann possessed the ball in front of the Ford goal mouth. Fieselmann had no opening and pushed the ball to the right side of the goal where sophomore Abbie Fischer took one step and slammed the ball into the goal at 25:47 for a 3-1 lead.

Melissa LaVan made one save in goal for the Garnet while Amie Roe had four saves for the Fords (4-11-1, 1-6-1 CC).

It was the sixth goal of the season for Fischer and Fieselmann's sixth assist, tying her with Alex Clegg '08 for the team lead.

With three scores on Tuesday evening, Swarthmore increases its team total to 45 goals in 14 games. That is the most goals by a Garnet team since the 2000 squad put home 54 goals in 21 games.

Swarthmore improves to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference, moving into a four-way tie with F&M, McDaniel, and Washington (Md.) for fourth place in the Centennial standings.

The Garnet will take on the Shorewomen in their final home contest on Thursday, October 27 at 4:30 p.m.
